Aṣọ Òkè in Depth
A technical study of aṣọ òkè, the Yoruba narrow-strip prestige cloth, covering the ọfì loom's parts and mechanics, dye and fiber chemistry, structural weaving techniques, and the named regional centers that produce it.
Aṣọ òkè is the handwoven prestige cloth of the Yoruba, produced on a horizontal narrow-strip loom in continuous bands roughly ten to fifteen centimetres wide that are cut and sewn selvedge to selvedge into finished garments . What follows goes deeper on the ọfì loom's mechanical parts, the fiber and dye chemistry behind the classic weaves, the structural techniques that produce pattern on the strip, and the organisation of production in the named historical weaving centers.
The ọfì Loom: Parts and Mechanism
The men's horizontal double-heddle treadle loom is called ọfì in Yoruba. Its defining engineering fact, as arts-textiles notes, is that the warp is stretched out along the ground for several metres in front of a seated weaver and held in tension by a dragged weight, and pattern has to be planned before weaving begins because a finished strip cannot be adjusted once cut [arts-textiles]. The loom's working parts are documented in the standard survey literature on West African strip weaving :
- The reed or beater. A comb-like frame, traditionally built from fine bamboo or palm-rib splints set into a wood or metal frame, that keeps the warp threads evenly spaced and beats each new weft pick firmly against the growing cloth .
- The heddles. Two sets of string loops, suspended from an overhead support, that divide the warp into two alternating sheets. Raising one set and lowering the other opens the shed through which the shuttle passes; the double heddle, worked by foot treadles, is what lets the Yoruba weaver change sheds quickly and float supplementary weft threads for pattern, and it is the feature that most clearly distinguishes this loom from the women's upright single-heddle loom [arts-textiles].
- The treadles. Foot pedals, often carved from wood or shaped calabash, connected to the heddles so that alternating foot pressure raises and lowers the sheds without the weaver's hands leaving the shuttle and reed .
- The shuttle. A boat-shaped wooden case carrying a bobbin of weft yarn, thrown by hand back and forth across the open shed .
- The drag weight. A stone or heavy weighted sledge tied to the far end of the warp, positioned some distance from the loom frame along the ground. As the weaver works and winds finished cloth onto the cloth beam near the seat, the weight is dragged forward, keeping the warp under steady, even tension without snapping the handspun threads [arts-textiles].
Weaving on this loom produces cloth that is predominantly warp-faced: the closely packed vertical warp threads dominate the visible surface and largely conceal the weft, which is why the striped and plaid patterning of aṣọ òkè is set up on the warping board before the weaver ever sits down at the loom .
Fiber and Dye Chemistry
Cotton
Locally grown cotton, òwú, was the base fiber for most aṣọ òkè and for the everyday cloth women wove on the vertical loom. Cotton processing, traditionally a woman's economic domain, moved from ginning (separating seed from lint) through bowing, which uses a vibrating bowstring to open and aerate the raw fiber, to spinning on a hand-turned drop spindle weighted with a clay or wood whorl .
Wild silk: sányán
Sányán silk comes not from a cultivated, reeled cocoon but from the communal nests of wild caterpillars of the genus Anaphe, principally Anaphe venata and the species now classified as Anaphe panda (long recorded under the synonym Anaphe infracta) . These caterpillars mass together and spin a shared bag-like nest on host trees, recorded in the literature as including Bridelia micrantha and, for Anaphe venata, Triplochiton scleroxylon . The nests are gathered from the bush, and because the silk is a matted communal cocoon rather than a single continuous filament, it cannot be reeled the way cultivated silkworm silk can; the sericin gum is loosened by boiling and the fiber is teased apart and hand-spun, which is why sányán yarn is irregular and produces the characteristic rough-textured, pale beige to greyish-tan cloth rather than a smooth, lustrous one . In parts of Nigeria the boiled cocoon mass is spun mixed with native cotton yarn, and the resulting cloth is the one termed sányán .
Indigo: àrò
Yoruba indigo dyeing uses elú, a West African indigo-bearing vine of the pea family whose accepted botanical name is now Philenoptera cyanescens, previously classified as Lonchocarpus cyanescens . It is a different plant from Indigofera tinctoria, the Asian indigo species of the world trade, a distinction the arts-textiles file also flags [arts-textiles]. Indigo pigment does not dissolve in water and cannot dye anything as it stands; it must first be reduced, in an alkaline solution, to soluble leuco-indigo, which the fiber absorbs and which then reoxidises to blue on contact with air after the yarn is lifted out and exposed . The traditional alkali is lye leached from wood ash, and dye strength is built by repeated dipping and air oxidation cycles, which is how a single vat produces shades running from a pale sky blue to a saturated, near-black indigo [arts-textiles]. Àlàárì red
Historically, the crimson and magenta color of àlàárì came from two distinct sources: a decoction of camwood bark, osùn (from Baphia nitida), used on native fiber, and unravelled magenta waste silk brought across the Sahara by long-distance trade . The Yoruba term àlàárì is generally derived from the Arabic al-ḥarīr, meaning silk, and this etymology reflects the cloth's origin as an import good moving down the trans-Saharan caravan routes before locally dyed substitutes became common .
The Three Canonical Prestige Weaves
Arts-textiles already establishes sányán, àlàárì and ẹtù as the classic triad and gives their basic color and status associations [arts-textiles]. Two further documented technical and semantic details are worth adding here.
First, sányán's central white cotton warp stripe, a strip-long band of undyed cotton running down the middle of the natural beige silk ground, is a visual signature repeated across historical sányán weaving and gives the cloth its immediately recognisable appearance next to plain cotton or dyed strips .
Second, ẹtù's name is a direct reference to Numida meleagris, the guinea fowl: the cloth's very fine light warp and weft lines, sometimes as narrow as a single thread, crossing a deep indigo-to-black ground, are read as a visual echo of the bird's speckled plumage, which is the naming logic behind the cloth [arts-textiles].
Weaving Techniques
Three structural techniques account for most of the pattern variety seen on aṣọ òkè strips.
Warp-faced striping. The basic structure of the cloth is warp-faced, meaning the closely set warp threads conceal the weft almost entirely, so pattern is created chiefly by alternating colored and undyed yarns on the warping board before the strip is ever woven, producing the large historical vocabulary of named stripe and plaid patterns .
Openwork. Openwork is one of the most distinctive decorative techniques in Yoruba narrow-strip weaving. Extra weft threads are used to tie together small bundles of warp ends at chosen points, pulling them close and leaving small perforations or lattice-like holes in the cloth surface; the extra wefts themselves form part of the visible pattern . When strips carrying this treatment are sewn edge to edge, the perforated fields align into a continuous decorative field across the finished cloth.
Supplementary weft float. Contrasting weft threads, historically silk and increasingly imported metallic or synthetic yarns, are laid into the shed alongside the structural ground weft and float across several warp ends on the cloth face without penetrating fully to the back. This produces raised figurative and geometric motifs, including triangles, comb shapes, and forms associated with Quranic writing boards, and is a documented technique in the standard textile literature on aṣọ òkè .
Regional Centers of Production
Strip weaving occurs across Yorùbáland, but several centers developed identifiable production organisation.
Ìṣẹ́yìn
Ìṣẹ́yìn, in the savanna hills northwest of Ibadan, is the best-documented commercial center for aṣọ òkè and remains the largest today [arts-textiles]. Fieldwork from the late 1960s recorded weaving in Ìṣẹ́yìn as organised around residence and lineage: weavers' cooperative societies drew their membership from single quarters and kin groups, with Oke-Oja recorded as one of the busiest quarters for both weaving and the marketing of finished cloth . That study also found that only a minority of active weavers, 126 individuals across four societies at the time of the research, belonged to formal cooperative structures despite the cooperatives becoming a conspicuous feature of the trade, which indicates that most Ìṣẹ́yìn production still ran through informal household and lineage channels rather than through the cooperative system .
Ọ̀yọ́
As the seat of the Aláàfin and the historical Ọ̀yọ́ court, Ọ̀yọ́ weavers worked under direct palace patronage, and the town is recorded, alongside Ìṣẹ́yìn and Ìlọrin, as one of the significant historical centers of aṣọ òkè production [arts-textiles].
Ìlọrin
At the northern edge of Yorùbáland, Ìlọrin sat at a confluence of Yoruba, Hausa and Nupe weaving traditions and trade routes, and twentieth-century fieldwork on weaving there documents its role in supplying both domestic and external demand . Aṣọ òkè strips from Ìlọrin are recorded as incorporating weft-float motifs worked in imported silk, consistent with the town's position on long-distance trade routes that brought foreign fiber north and south .
Òwọ̀
The Òwọ̀ kingdom, in the eastern Yoruba forest zone, has its own well-documented prestige-textile tradition, distinct from the aṣọ òkè triad. The best-recorded example is ṣẹghọ̀ṣẹ́n, "the cloth that eats money," an extremely costly cloth reserved for weddings, chieftaincy installations and kingship ceremonies and understood in Òwọ̀ as beyond the financial reach of ordinary people . Fieldwork on Òwọ̀ textiles more broadly documents cloth there functioning as a marker of social and political rank, ritual importance and prestige, produced and controlled by women . Òwọ̀ is also home to the Igogo festival honouring Queen Orọ̀nsẹ́n, a multi-day royal ceremony recorded as dating back centuries, during which the Olówó and his chiefs wear women's dress and coral beads . Contemporary Production
Aṣọ òkè weaving has continued through the twentieth and twenty-first centuries alongside the mass import of factory-printed cloth, and it remains bound to the aṣọ ẹbí economy that arts-textiles covers in full [arts-textiles]. One documented change is a shift in who weaves. Weaving on the horizontal loom was historically men's work, with women controlling marketing and finance rather than working the loom itself, but contemporary reporting on Ìṣẹ́yìn describes a workforce now made up mostly of women, alongside a documented movement of young women into weaving and design roles that were formerly closed to them . Weavers and traders in Ìṣẹ́yìn have also organised collectively against threats to their livelihood, including a 2012 Lagos rally protesting the import of Chinese-made imitation strip cloth into the domestic market .
