Decorative pattern for Instruments and the Drum Language
The Yoruba talking drum is not a metaphor and it is not an approximation. The dùndún reproduces the tone contours of Yoruba speech with a measured correlation to spoken tone above 0.98, and skilled players can drum a sentence they have never heard before and be understood. The mechanism works because Yoruba is a tone language, because the drum's pitch can be changed continuously while it sounds, and because what the drum loses, all the consonants and vowel qualities, is recovered by context and by deliberate redundancy. The dùndún family
Construction. The dùndún is a waisted, hourglass-shaped, double-headed drum. Leather or gut cords run the length of the body connecting the two membranes directly to each other, and critically they do not touch the wooden body . That is what makes the instrument work: squeezing the cords tightens both heads at once, and because the cords bypass the wood there is nothing to interfere with the tension change.
The cords are the ọ̀sán . The player carries the drum horizontally on a shoulder strap and squeezes the cords between arm and ribs, controlling them with the left fingers, wrist and hip . Minimal pressure gives the lowest pitch and increasing pressure raises it, across a range of a full octave, and because pressure can be changed while the head is still vibrating, the drum produces continuous glissandi . That is the property that lets it follow a spoken pitch contour rather than approximating it with discrete notes.
The beater is a curved stick, ọ̀pá or kọ̀ngọ́, with the head covered in rubber or leather .
Akinbo's component list for the gángan gives seven parts: the carved hourglass resonator with its tunnel-like bore; two membranes, traditionally goatskin or cow foetus skin; leather tension cords; a taut tuning rope of leather or wool; a leather carrying strap with cloth padding; leather rings called ẹ̀gì holding the membranes in place; and the curved playing stick .
The ensemble. González and Oludare organise the family into three sub-families, which is the most rigorous published taxonomy :
The ìyáàlù group, comprising the ìyáàlù, literally mother drum, which leads, plus keríkerì, ìsáájú and ìkehìn. The names ìsáájú and ìkehìn mean the one that goes before and the one that comes last, describing their position in the texture. The variant name àtẹ̀lé, the one that follows, appears in other listings and is a documented alternative, but ìsáájú and ìkehìn are the better-attested pair .
The gángan group, comprising gángan, àdàmọ̀ and kànàngó, smaller hourglass drums.
The gúdúgúdú, which is not an hourglass drum at all. It is a single-headed bowl or kettle drum, it cannot be pressure-tuned, and its pitch is instead adjusted by paste applied to the head . It functions in the ensemble as a fixed-pitch timekeeper against which the variable pitch of the ìyáàlù is heard.
A second ìyáàlù may play a bass pattern called èjìn .
The bàtá family
Construction. The ìyáàlù bàtá is a large conical double-headed drum, about 80 centimetres long, with two heads of markedly different size . The large head is the ojú òjò, about 35 centimetres, and the small head the ṣáṣá, about 20 centimetres. The membranes are fixed by a net of animal-skin ropes, and the decisive difference from the dùndún is that the drummer cannot retune during performance . Pitch is fixed. A tuning paste called ìdá is applied to the centre of the large membrane to modify its sound, and that is the only adjustment available .
The Endangered Material Knowledge Programme project at Obafemi Awolowo University has documented the making of bàtá as a full craft chain, from logging the tree through tanning, carving, dyeing, rim-making, assembly and testing, using antelope skin, ọsán, cut in a spiral to hold both ends of the drum together .
Playing technique. The ojú òjò is played with the hand in three strokes: an open tone with the flat hand, low and sustained; a muted tone with the hand held on the membrane, short; and a slap with spread fingers at the centre, bright and high . The ṣáṣá is struck with the bílálà, a flexible strip of animal skin, producing a loud high sound .
The ensemble. Ìyáàlù bàtá plus omele bàtá, with either omele méjì, comprising omele akọ and kúdi, or omele méta, adding àdàmọ̀ or aféré . The omele bàtá is three small drums of about 20 centimetres bound together and carried vertically, each struck on one membrane with a bílálà strip . Tempo is set by the ìyáàlù, supported by the gentler omele abo and backed by the sharper omele akọ, with the flat kúdi .
Ṣàngó, and why bàtá is harder. The association with Ṣàngó is firmly attested, along with use for Egúngún, Èṣù, Ọya and other òrìṣà, and the tradition holds that Ṣàngó demanded a drum that would suit his purpose and that only bàtá satisfied him . There is also a martial tradition recorded, that the original bàtá were played to frighten those who would make war on Ọ̀yọ́ and to intimidate citizens who might oppose the king .
Bàtá is consistently described as more difficult and more closed than dùndún, and there are two separate reasons which should not be conflated. The first is organological: because the heads cannot be retuned, tone has to be encoded through timbre and stroke combination rather than through pitch, which is a far less transparent mapping . The second is social: in bàtá drumming and dancing there is an opening rite and a closing rite known only to initiated members of the Àyàn lineage, and the practice is taught only in part even to members of the Ṣàngó cult .
Other instruments
Ìgbìn, the sacred drum set of Ọbàtálá, single-membrane drums with peg bracing, played with a single straight stick in the right hand while the left hand regulates the tone, used at the weekly Ọ̀sẹ̀-Òòṣà and at the annual Ìràwé worship, and playable during worship only by Ọbàtálá priests . The ensemble membership is contested: Samuel gives ìyáàlù, omele-akọ and omele-abo, while Olorunyomi names Ọbàtálá's igbin quartet as Ìyánlá, Ìyá Àgàn, Keke and Afeere . Both are published and no third source was found to adjudicate; the disagreement is reported rather than resolved.
Gbẹ̀du or agba, literally big drum, the largest Yoruba drum, ornately carved with animals, birds and the phallus, played with both open palm and stick, signifying royalty and used on state occasions and in Ògbóni ceremonies . It is restricted. In the Ìsàgun rite the ọba alone may dance to it. The claim that unauthorised use was prosecuted as sedition traces to A. K. Ajisafe's The Laws and Customs of the Yoruba People of 1924, a colonial-era compilation which should be read as such . In contemporary Nigerian usage the word has drifted to mean Afropop generally or simply a groove.
Ìpèsè, the drum of Ifá and Ọ̀rúnmìlà, used at the burial of an Ifá priest to pay last respects and to draw the line between the living and the dead, playable only by initiates . Olorunyomi pairs it with àgéré as Ọ̀rúnmìlà's drums .
Ṣẹ̀kẹ̀rẹ̀, a dried gourd with beads or cowries woven into a net around the outside. It is played three ways: shaken, struck against the hand, or given a twisting wrist motion so that the gourd moves inside the relatively stationary net, producing a friction sound different from either shaking or striking.
Agogo, a clapperless iron bell struck externally, high pitched. Ṣáworo and aró are described as similar but lower in pitch, on weakly sourced authority. Olorunyomi assigns agogo and ṣẹ̀kẹ̀rẹ̀ to Ògún .
Agidigbo, also called molo in this Yoruba usage, a large plucked lamellophone big enough to rest on the lap, with five metal tongues on a box roughly two feet by two and a half by nine inches, divided into a set of two carrying rhythm and a set of three carrying high, middle and low melodic notes . It is central to àpàlà. The name molo is used for a plucked lute in Hausa and Sahelian contexts, so the equation with agidigbo is specific to Yoruba usage.
Gòjé, a one-string bowed fiddle of northern and Sahelian origin, snake or lizard skin over a gourd bowl with a horsehair string, adopted into Yoruba sákárà . Ṣàkàrà drum, a single-headed frame drum with an earthenware frame, the defining instrument of that genre .
Wind instruments including the ìwo horn were not adequately documented in the sources consulted and nothing specific is asserted about them here.
Àyàn: who owns drumming
Àyàn was the first Yoruba drum maker and drummer, deified after his death as the god of drumming . The deity resides in the wood, specifically the Cordia millenii timber from which drums are made . Professional drummers share the name àyàn with the òrìṣà because they are the human agents who play the ìlù, the drum, which is the emblem of Òrìṣà Àyàn and through which the deity speaks; the alternative term for a drummer is onílù .
The Egúngún connection is doctrinal. By Ifá tradition, when the first egúngún descended to stabilise the world, the orchestra of àyàn drummed them home from the forest grove, and this established a pact: it is forbidden for any egúngún to flog the drummers . In a masquerade where the egúngún may strike almost anyone, the drummers are the exception, and the reason is a debt.
Àyàngalú is the name of the first drummer and patron, held to be the spirit that inspires living drummers, and the dictum recorded for him is Àyàngalú, asòrò ìgí, Àyàn of Agalu who speaks through the medium of wood . Akin Euba suggested Àyàn may be regarded as the ultimate ancestor of all drummers .
Drummers from these lineages carry names beginning with Àyàn: Àyàndìran, Àyànwálé, Àyàntúnjí, Àyànbísí, Àyànlówò, Àyàntúndé, Àyànléke, Aláyànde, Àyàntáyò .
Why the lineage matters technically, not just ceremonially. González and Oludare quote an informant to the effect that only those who learn through Àyàn, the indigenous knowledge system of drumming, will know the àṣà, the culture, and the ìṣe, the practice, of the drum . Their paper documents a measurable consequence: techniques including the glides and the rendering of the consonant /r/ are preserved in lineage-trained playing and are increasingly omitted by urban practitioners trained outside it . Lineage transmission is not preserving etiquette. It is preserving encoding capacity, and when it lapses the drum's ability to speak degrades.
Named bàtá drumming and dancing lineages include Adéògún and Aládòkun at Ìkìrun, Àjàngìlá at Ìrágberí, Làsísì Àlùjọ̀nú at Ọ̀yọ́, and Adisa Omódùnbí at Ilé-Ifẹ̀; dance in present-day Yorubaland is no longer restricted to these lineages .
How the drum language actually works
The basis. Yoruba has three contrastive tones, high, mid and low, named ohùn òkè, àárín and ìsàlẹ̀ . On the dùndún the mapping is direct: a loosened membrane gives low, half-tensioned gives mid, tight gives high . Because tension can be changed while the head sounds, contour and gliding tones are mimicked directly rather than approximated.
The measurement. Akinbo measured fundamental frequency on the gángan across twelve tokens per tone and obtained means of 172 Hz for high, 125 Hz for mid and 61 Hz for low, with a correlation between speech tones and drum tones of R at or above 0.98 and p at or below 0.0043 . That is the hard empirical demonstration that the drum is tracking linguistic tone rather than evoking it, and it is worth citing whenever the talking drum is described as symbolic or approximate.
Syllables to strokes. Euba's four techniques, as reported by Durojaye and colleagues, are one stroke per syllable; many strokes for one syllable; one stroke for two or more syllables; and one stroke for a syllable carrying several tone levels . Akinbo refines this: a CV syllable obligatorily gets one stroke, a word-initial vowel obligatorily one, a word-medial vowel optionally, a CVCV two, and a bimoraic CVV one stroke in natural speech and two in careful speech .
The drum also reproduces tonal phonological processes rather than just citation tones, including contour formation and pitch delay in high-low and low-high sequences, high-raising in high-low sequences, low-lowering in low-high sequences, and grammatical tones marking subject and genitive constructions . This is the strongest evidence that what the drum encodes is a linguistic representation and not a melody.
What is lost. Akinbo states the limit plainly: tone-based speech surrogates like Yoruba do not encode segmental identity . Consonants and vowel qualities are not transmitted. This is the source of all the ambiguity.
Partial exceptions. Skilled dùndún players do encode some sub-tonal information. González and Oludare document the consonant /r/ rendered as a fast double stroke, vowel intensity differences with softer amplitude on /u/, and rising intonation conveyed through pause length . They also observe that the gángan version of the same sentence omits the glides, the /r/ representation and the intensity contrasts, so the richness of the encoding varies by instrument and by the player's training .
Worked example one: the minimal triplet
The clearest demonstration of the ambiguity problem is a set of Yoruba verbs distinguished only by tone. Akinbo's published gángan examples include :

Notes. On the drum these three verbs are identical in everything except pitch level, and pitch level is precisely the one feature the drum transmits. So the drum distinguishes them perfectly while transmitting nothing else about them, which is the mechanism in its purest form. Any listener hearing a single high stroke where a verb is expected knows the verb is rá and not ra or rà, and knows nothing else. The rest has to come from context.
Akinbo's further published examples show two-syllable tone patterns :
pákò, high-low: chewing stick
ìlú, low-high: city
rẹ̀ẹ́, low-high across a long vowel: be tired
ríi, high-mid across a long vowel: see it
jẹẹ́, mid-high across a long vowel: eat it
The long-vowel cases matter because they show the drum handling a single syllable carrying two tone levels, which is Euba's fourth technique in operation.
Worked example two: the unfamiliar sentence
González and Oludare gave their informants a sentence they had not heard before and asked them to drum it ad hoc on four different drums .

Notes on the translation
The documented renderings are specific. Bàbá was drummed with an upward gliding pitch. The vowel sequence in Bàbá àgbà was rendered with a slow pitch drop on the dùndún and, on the ìyáàlù bàtá, with rapid rhythmic flam figures instead, because the bàtá cannot glide. Kaán was given an upward glide. The /r/ in lórí àga was rendered as a fast double stroke. The /u/ in pupa was played at softer amplitude .
Why this example matters more than any other. The players had never encountered this sentence. That rules out the interpretation that the talking drum is a phrasebook of memorised formulae. It is a generative system: a competent player can encode arbitrary new Yoruba, which is what makes it a surrogate speech system in the technical sense rather than a signalling code.
Worked example three: disambiguation by expansion
The standard method of resolving ambiguity is to say more than speech would say. Durojaye and colleagues illustrate this with a proverb drummed on the dùndún, noting that the phrase would typically be spoken without the repetition, and that when drummed the proverb is elaborated by repeating the first phrase, because repetition provides context and removes ambiguity in meaning . The published English gloss is "Public or private, there is no place the God cannot see, public or private." The Yoruba original appears in the paper as a figure image and was not recoverable in text with diacritics, so it is not reproduced here rather than reconstructed.
The formal treatment of this principle is Arewa and Adekola's 1980 article on redundancy principles of statistical communication applied to the Yoruba talking drum, which is the standard citation for the argument . The full text was not accessible for this file, so its internal argument is not paraphrased.
Redundancy is also built into the ensemble. In traditional bàtá performance the ìyáàlù bàtá is supported by the omele abo specifically to enhance intelligibility: the omele's separately tuned small drums render tone directly by pitch, supplying the pitch information that the ìyáàlù's timbre-based encoding leaves ambiguous . The ensemble is an error-correcting architecture.

Notes on the translation
The head text is not about anatomy. Orí here is the inner head, the seat of destiny, so the line is a prayer that one's own destiny not be the thing that ruins one, which is a coherent worry within Yoruba thought where a person chooses their orí before birth and cannot afterwards see what they chose. English "may our head not make us suffer" reads as odd or comic and the Yoruba is neither. Jacob's printed source has inconsistent diacritics in places and the texts above follow his printing with obvious artefacts normalised.
The dispute: does bàtá speak the same way?
This is a live scholarly disagreement and it should be presented as one.
Villepastour's position.Ancient Text Messages of the Yorùbá Bàtá Drum: Cracking the Code (Ashgate, 2010) is the first academic study of bàtá's communication technology and of the coded spoken language bàtá drummers call ẹ̀ná bàtá . Her argument is that ẹ̀ná bàtá is a formal language acting as an interface: spoken Yoruba is transformed into ẹ̀ná, ẹ̀ná prescribes the drum strokes, and listeners extract meaning from what is drummed. She holds that the encoding method links to universal linguistic properties unknown to the musicians themselves, and that bàtá encoding is no less precise than dùndún, merely different in kind .
The counter-position. González and Oludare explicitly challenge the necessity of ẹ̀ná as a linguistic intermediary, noting that Akin Euba considers ẹ̀ná of lesser importance for bàtá speech surrogacy, and proposing that ẹ̀ná functions as a method for teaching and memorising and as a form of in-group code talking rather than an obligatory step in the encoding chain . Their evidence is that their bàtá players rendered a previously unknown sentence, which cuts against a fixed-repertoire model . Euba reviewed Villepastour's book in Ethnomusicology in 2011, so the two principals have engaged directly .
The underlying practice of ẹ̀ná as Yoruba code talking is documented independently by Akinwumi Isola .
Where the evidence lands. The organological facts are not in dispute. Bàtá cannot retune mid-performance, so it cannot mimic pitch contour the way dùndún does and must encode tone through timbre and stroke combination. What is disputed is whether that makes its repertoire fixed. The common formulation, that dùndún is flexible and generative while bàtá is a fixed coded repertoire, is the traditional view and is now under active revision, and González and Oludare's unfamiliar-sentence result suggests more flexibility than it allows. A reader should treat the flexible-versus-fixed contrast as a claim in dispute rather than as an established fact.
Speech or music?
Durojaye and colleagues tested whether listeners hear dùndún performances as speech-like or music-like, and reached 85 percent prediction accuracy by logistic regression on acoustic features . Greater pulse clarity and greater timbre change predicted hearing it as music; greater mean intensity and greater pitch change between notes predicted hearing it as speech. Listeners familiar with dùndún discriminated significantly better .
This matters because it establishes that the boundary between the drum's speaking and its playing is real, is acoustically grounded, and is partly a matter of cultural competence. The dùndún is not always speaking. It moves in and out of speech, and a competent listener knows which mode it is in.
Repertoires by context
Ṣàngó takes bàtá: ìyáàlù, omele abo, kúdi, omele akọ . Ọbàtálá takes ìgbìn, playable in worship only by his priests . Ifá and Ọ̀rúnmìlà take ìpèsè and àgéré, with ìpèsè restricted to initiates . Ògún takes agogo and ṣẹ̀kẹ̀rẹ̀ . Egúngún takes the dùndún ensemble, with the ìyáàlù conveying coded texts that the masked dancer decodes through movement . Royal and Ògbóni occasions take gbẹ̀du or agba, restricted . Ọya and Èṣù are also recorded with bàtá . The Gẹ̀lẹ̀dẹ́ ensemble was not documented in the sources consulted for this file.
