Weapons and Military Technology
Yorùbá arms and fortification from iron-age edged weapons and Ọ̀yọ́'s cavalry economy through the nineteenth-century transition to imported firearms, and the archaeological evidence for defensive earthworks going back centuries before European contact.
Yorùbá military technology moved through two distinct systems before the colonial period. In the open savanna north of the forest, Old Ọ̀yọ́ built an empire on imported cavalry, a trade dependent on horses that could not reproduce in the tsetse-infested south. In the nineteenth century, after Ọ̀yọ́'s collapse, warfare shifted decisively into the forest belt and into infantry armies increasingly armed with imported firearms, culminating in the breech-loading rifles of the Kiriji war. Beneath both systems lay a long tradition of monumental earthwork fortification, now dated by archaeology to centuries before either cavalry or firearms mattered. Edged and missile weapons
Before firearms, Yorùbá armies fought with iron weapons forged by local blacksmiths and with wooden shock and missile weapons. Warfare's metallurgical foundation was sacralised through the veneration of Ògún, the òrìṣà of iron and combat; that ritual dimension is covered fully elsewhere in this section.
Missile warfare depended on the self-bow (ọfà) rather than the crossbow, which appears only in limited documented instances across the wider Guinea forest region. Arrows were tipped with small barbed iron points and, for hunting and for war alike, frequently coated with botanical poisons; the light draw weight of regional bows made poison rather than kinetic force the primary killing mechanism, so that even a superficial wound could incapacitate.
For close combat, Yorùbá fighters carried spears (ọ̀kọ̀) in both heavy thrusting and lighter throwing forms, and two structurally distinct sword types: the idà, a long straight double-edged blade associated with officers, cavalry and nobility, and heavier single-edged cutting blades derived from agricultural cutlasses and billhooks, which served as the standard slashing weapon of infantry. Clubs and short stabbing daggers rounded out the personal arsenal.
The Ọ̀yọ́ cavalry economy
Ọ̀yọ́'s dominance from roughly 1600 to 1836 rested on cavalry, and cavalry in West Africa is a trade good problem before it is a tactical one. Horses cannot sustain a breeding population in tsetse fly country, since the fly transmits trypanosomiasis, a disease fatal to horses; the tsetse belt covers most of the forest zone south of the savanna margin. Ọ̀yọ́ occupied open woodland and savanna north of that belt and could therefore deploy cavalry, but it could not breed its own remounts at scale and depended on continuous imports of horses from Borgu, Nupe and Hausa traders across and beyond the Niger.
This dependency shaped Ọ̀yọ́'s whole political economy. Sustaining the horse trade required tribute networks, slave-raiding to generate the wealth to pay for imports, and long-distance trade corridors linking the Sahel to the Atlantic coast, a structure Robin Law's study of the Ọ̀yọ́ cavalry state sets out as the empire's defining strategic constraint. Campaigns were fought overwhelmingly in the dry season, when hardened ground favoured mounted movement and tsetse activity fell, and Ọ̀yọ́'s cavalry gave it decisive superiority over forest-based neighbours who could field no equivalent mounted force, including early campaigns against Dahomey.
That advantage disappeared with Ọ̀yọ́ itself. The nineteenth-century wars, fought overwhelmingly in the forest belt after the empire's fall, were fought on foot; cavalry played a marginal role in the successor-state conflicts precisely because Ìbàdàn, Ìjàyè and the eastern kingdoms all operated inside or near tsetse country.
The nineteenth-century firearms transition
Firearms reached the Yorùbá coast in small numbers during the eighteenth century, but interior powers did not adopt them at scale until the wars of the 1820s, coinciding with the Ọ̀wu war and the disintegration of Old Ọ̀yọ́. The first generation of weapons in wide use were long-barrelled flintlock muzzle-loaders, generically called Dane guns (ìbọn) across West Africa. These were slow to reload, typically several minutes per shot, and inaccurate at range, which shaped nineteenth-century Yorùbá infantry tactics around massed volley fire followed by close-quarters engagement with cutlasses, and around rotating firing ranks so that a continuous rate of fire could be maintained while individual muskets were reloaded.
Local blacksmiths integrated the new technology quickly rather than depending entirely on imports. When manufactured shot was unavailable, smiths cast lead pellets or cut iron rods into improvised slugs, repaired damaged locks, restocked broken barrels, and in some cases produced coarse local gunpowder from saltpetre, sulphur and charcoal, though imported powder remained preferred for its more reliable ignition.
The decisive technological shift came during the Sixteen Years War (Kiriji war, 1877 to 1893), narrated in full in [[history-nineteenth-century-wars]]. The Ẹ̀kìtìparapọ̀ coalition, supplied through a Lagos-based diaspora network of Ìjẹ̀ṣà and Èkìtì returnees, imported modern breech-loading rifles, Snider-Enfield and Martini-Henry weapons among them, along with metallic cartridges. These weapons had far greater range, accuracy and rate of fire than Ìbàdàn's Dane guns, and Ìbàdàn could not obtain equivalent arms despite repeated appeals to Lagos suppliers. The resulting firepower imbalance is the direct technological cause of the entrenched, static warfare that developed at the Kiriji and Ìmẹ̀sí-Ilé camps: neither side could dislodge the other by open assault once the eastern confederacy held rifles capable of breaking a massed advance at range, and the two armies instead faced each other from fortified positions for years, a configuration closer to trench warfare than to the open campaigns of earlier decades.
Fortification and siege engineering
Yorùbá towns across both the savanna and forest zones were defended by earthwork fortification: an excavated outer ditch with its spoil piled inward to form a rampart, reinforced with laterite or clay courses in drier regions and cut as sheer embankments into laterite subsoil in the wetter forest zones of Ìjẹ̀bú and Èkìtì, sometimes routed through groundwater to create a flooded moat. Larger capitals maintained more than one concentric wall circuit, with the outer ring enclosing farmland so a besieged population could sustain itself over a prolonged siege. Fortified, garrisoned gates controlled entry and often functioned as toll points.
Two siege methods dominate the documented record: direct assault against gates and weak points using ladders and fire, and the slower method of encirclement and blockade, in which the besieging force cut off the town's water and farmland with its own counter-earthworks until the defenders capitulated. The Ìjàyè war of 1860 to 1862 is the best documented instance of the blockade method; that campaign's command decisions belong to [[people-ibadan-and-its-war-chiefs]] rather than this file.
Archaeological evidence
Archaeology confirms that large-scale defensive earthwork construction in the region predates both the transatlantic firearms trade and, in some cases, Islam's arrival in the interior by centuries.
The most extensive individual site is Sungbo's Ẹrẹdò, an enormous ditch-and-bank system enclosing the historic core of the Ìjẹ̀bú kingdom, running well over one hundred kilometres in circumference with ditch depths reaching several metres below the earthen bank in places. Its dating is genuinely contested rather than settled. Patrick Darling's original radiocarbon work, based on samples taken during his 1990s survey, produced dates clustering in the tenth and eleventh centuries CE (with individual determinations as early as the ninth century). More recent excavation and dating work has produced a later range, clustering in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. Both positions rest on real radiocarbon evidence from different excavation campaigns, and this file does not adjudicate between them; a reader should treat any single confident date for the Ẹrẹdò's origin as one position in an open scholarly disagreement, not as settled fact.
At Ọ̀yọ́-Ilé, the former imperial capital, archaeological mapping beginning with Robert Soper's fieldwork in the 1970s and continued by later interdisciplinary surveys has documented multiple concentric wall circuits enclosing the city core, with the designated archaeological site covering an area close to three thousand hectares; larger figures sometimes quoted for the site's outer extent at its eighteenth-century peak are not well supported in the sources consulted for this file and are not repeated here. The site preserves substantial evidence of the city's material culture beyond its fortifications, including carved wooden posts recovered and documented by Soper.
The record consulted for this file did not turn up reliable archaeological documentation of specific equestrian artefacts, bridle fittings or stirrups, recovered from excavation at Old Bara or comparable Ọ̀yọ́-region mortuary sites; where such items are discussed in the broader literature on Ọ̀yọ́'s cavalry, they are generally treated as historically and ethnographically documented imports rather than as excavated archaeological finds, and this file does not claim otherwise.
