Samuel Ajayi Crowther, a native speaker and liberated captive from Òsogbo, published his foundational Vocabulary of the Yoruba Language in 1843 and expanded grammar in 1852 [S29, S30]. Crowther recognized the fundamental acoustic distinction between close-mid and open-mid vowels, introducing underdots to create ẹ (/ɛ/) and ọ (/ɔ/) to distinguish them from e (/e/) and o (/o/) [S29, S30].
In 1858, the American Southern Baptist missionary Thomas Jefferson Bowen published his Grammar and Dictionary of the Yoruba Language, noting the extensive phonetic co-occurrence rules that prevented ẹ and ọ from mixing freely with e and o in simple words .
On January 28 and 29, 1875, the CMS convened the historic Conference on Yorùbá Orthography at the Faji Mission House in Lagos [S27, S28]. The conference formally ratified Crowther's subdot orthography (ẹ, ọ, ṣ), rejecting competing European phonetic alphabets (such as Karl Richard Lepsius's Standard Alphabet) [S27, S28]. Acoustic field studies across Ondo, Ekiti, and Osun states by Marek Przezdziecki documented the subtle coarticulatory vowel-to-vowel height effects that serve as the phonetic precursors for ATR phonologization .
In the Yorùbá diaspora of the Americas (such as Lucumí liturgical registers in Cuba and Trinidad Yorùbá), where oral transmission persisted through religious chants and divination formulas without written standard reinforcement, the strict ATR co-occurrence restrictions have largely eroded . Diaspora liturgical speech exhibits significant vocalic variation, where Spanish and English phonological inventories have merged the open-mid and close-mid distinctions into five basic vowels (/a, e, i, o, u/), demonstrating that the maintenance of subtle ATR harmony systems requires continuous, active phonological enforcement in living speech communities .
